Often referred to as a nucleic acid or amino acid search, the purpose of this search is to identify amino acid (peptides and proteins) and/or nucleic acid (DNA) sequences that are an exact match or are homologously similar to a sequence of interest. There are several different types of biosequence searches that can be performed, including:
Exact - An amino acid or nucleic acid sequence exactly matches the query sequence.
Subsequence – An amino acid or nucleic acid sequence completely encompasses the query sequence but may also contain additional amino or nucleic acid segments.
Homology - An amino acid or nucleic acid sequences is retrieved based on how much similarity it has to the query sequence. Algorithms, such as Blast and Smith Waterman, are used to provide a score of how similar one sequence is to another.
