Rules Summary

 

  • A Sequence Listing may be submitted to a requesting office via three methods:
    1. Paper and disc (containing an ASCII text computer-readable form on CD).
    2. ASCII text uploaded via Electronic Filing System (EFS).
    3. "Paperless Submission" consisting of multiple CD submissions, but no paper.
  • Every sequence disclosed in the specification, claims, abstract and figures, consisting of at least ten nucleotides (four or more of which are specifically defined) and/or four or more specifically defined amino acids, even if disclosed for example purposes, illustrative purposes, and/or not claimed, must appear in the Sequence Listing.
  • Each relevant sequence disclosed in the specification, claims, abstract and figures must be accompanied by a SEQ ID NO identifier that corresponds to the Sequence Listing (e.g., SEQ ID NO: 1).
  • Nucleotide sequences must be presented in single stranded, 5’ to 3’ orientation in the Sequence Listing even though, by convention, complementary DNA is disclosed in the 3’ to 5’ direction.
  • DNA sequences encoding an amino acid sequence must disclose the amino acids corresponding to the codons in the coding parts of a nucleotide sequence immediately below the corresponding codons. In addition, the amino acid sequence must also be assigned a separate SEQ ID NO identifier and be included in the Sequence Listing as such.
  • "Xaa" residues in amino acid sequences and "n" nucleotides in DNA sequences must be specifically defined (i.e. "Any amino acid," "Gly, Ser or Pro," "Unknown amino acid," etc.)
  • Sequences with even one D-amino acid are specifically excluded from Sequence Listing inclusion, although there is no penalty if inclusion is desired.
  • Branched sequences are specifically excluded from Sequence Listing inclusion, although there is no penalty if inclusion is desired.
  • Fragments of larger sequences may be omitted from the actual Sequence Listing so long as they are identified in the specification, claims, abstract and figures as specific residues/nucleotides of a larger sequence, which is included in the Sequence Listing (e.g., residues 1-10 of SEQ ID NO: 10).
  • A sequence of varying length must be disclosed in the Sequence Listing as its largest embodiment and properly explained "backwards" from the largest to smallest embodiment.
